Titans of the Trades
From Tech Startup to Owner in Construction
In the world of construction, we often see two typical traps: you’re either in the “boots on the jobsite” mode or you’re stuck chasing jobs, cashflow, and labor just to survive. But what if you could build a trades business that works for you — one where you are the strategic leader, not the day‑to‑day fixer?
That’s exactly what Jonah Canter, Owner of Canter Construction, did. With a background in software startups and even living overseas opening facilities early in his career, Jonah came into the construction industry with a different perspective. He noticed problems in the trades that most contractors accepted as “just how it is” and he decided to solve them.
From the Sidewalk to the Strategy Table
One of the early breakthroughs Jonah achieved was moving away from ad‑spend and phone book leads. Instead, he teamed with real estate agents to offer his firm as the go‑to for closing repair addendums and “ready to move in” homes. Over time, that created deeper client relationships and organic referrals.
When your business is visible to real estate professionals, you’re front of mind. That’s how he built momentum early without massive marketing budgets.
Marketing Like You’re Selling More Than Hammer & Nail
Jonah recognized that if you want to recruit great people and attract high‑end clients, you must look like it. He invested in high‑quality photography, drone footage, cinematic video, and an Instagram presence that doesn’t just show the remodeling; it tells a story.
He says Facebook? That’s for the “drive‑by” crowd. Instagram? That’s for people who aspire. If your business is stuck wrapping trucks and hoping that will bring the talent or jobs, you might be missing the story.
That kind of marketing appeals to both the client who wants a kitchen remodel AND the carpenter or project manager who wants to work for a company that values craftsmanship, brand and growth.
Hire Attitude Over Experience
Jonah looks for young, smart, motivated people who want to learn. One example: he hired someone from a non‑traditional background in estimating. The new hire didn’t know all the construction details yet, but he asked questions, shadowed Jonah for weeks, was in his truck daily, and after about eight weeks understood the business from the inside out.
That’s a training model: ride‑alongs, hands‑on, conversation heavy, question heavy. It builds loyalty, skill, and a team that grows with the business instead of just enduring it.
Culture Built to Scale
Jonah also talks about how he treats his employees like adults. No yelling. No “boss/employee” divide. When mistakes happen, his team is asked: “What are your solutions?” instead of “What did you mess up?”
Vacation is encouraged. Time off isn’t punished. Why? Because a culture built on trust, growth and mutual respect becomes a magnet for talent and lets you step away as owner.
That’s how you create a business that doesn’t own you. You build the systems, the people, the culture that take over. And you get to focus on the bigger fish: strategy, growth, leadership.
What This Means for Construction Leaders
If you’re leading a trades firm right now, consider three questions:
- Are you marketing your company in a way that attracts both the right clients and the right employees?
- Are you hiring for attitude first, then training for skill?
- Have you built a culture and system where you can step away from daily operations and lead instead of manage?
Jonah’s story isn’t just about “doing business in the trades.” It’s about doing it differently. It’s about building a company that scales, recruits, retains, grows. And doesn’t trap the owner in the truck, the jobsite, or the chaos.
